WE STUCK TOGETHER BY UNSPOKEN AGREEMENT. We formed a core center and didn’t deviate. I was in the lead, something I didn’t realize until twenty minutes into our excursion. My co-workers formed a ring around me and let me dictate the direction and speed. Somehow — and I would always question it — I knew exactly where to go.

The Gorgon stood in the center of a clearing in the middle of the wildlife preserve. I sensed a split second before we cleared the trees that she would be there. She seemed to be expecting us, and the amusement that lit her eyes sent chills through me.

“What took you so long?” she drawled.

She hadn’t even bothered to glamour herself. Really, there was no reason. We knew what she was. Even if she’d tried to cover her appearance, some of us — namely Raven, the pixie twins and me — would have seen beneath the veneer.

Before I could speak, Max stepped forward. “I thought your kind were extinct,” he said. “I’m glad to see that’s not true.”

The creature frowned at him, wrinkling her nose as though sniffing the air. “Mage,” she muttered. “What else do we have?” Her gaze bounced from face to face. “Another mage. A shifter. A ... I’m not sure what you are.” She focused long and hard on Dolph. “Magical, but not purebred. Not a threat.”

It was almost as if she was a robot computing the odds of attack.

When her gaze landed on Raven, I could almost feel the atmosphere between them crackling. “Speaking of creatures that are supposed to be extinct,” she said. “I have not seen a lamia in more than a century.”

“I could say the same of your kind,” Raven growled. “I guess we’re in the same boat. Oh, wait, we’re not. I’m not raising the dead to attack random people.”

The Gorgon cackled. “And just like those of your kind I’ve met — and eradicated — you talk when you don’t understand what you’re saying.” She turned to look at Naida and Nixie. “From another plane,” she murmured. “Same with the little man in the dress.” She moved on from them and zeroed in on Cole. “Now we’re getting to the heart of their power. An elemental.”

The way the woman talked to herself made my skin crawl. I remained rigid, though, and practically dared her to make the first move.

“You’ll have to excuse me,” Cole said in a brutally pleasant tone. “I’ve only read about your kind. I’ve never actually had the pleasure of meeting any of your sisters. This is like a childhood dream come to life.”

The Gorgon snorted. “Lies. It speaks lies to fool you.” She focused on me. “And you are ... something else.” She cocked her head, regarding me with unfathomable eyes. “Romani. Muddied blood. Powerful. Leader.”

I glanced toward Max. He didn’t appear bothered at being shuffled to the side in the leadership line. “You need to vacate this area,” I said. “You can’t keep doing what you’re doing. If you agree to leave, we’ll .
